Returnware
For years, we've measured software by how well it engages us.
Daily active users.
Time in app.
Retention.
Sessions.
Success is often defined by how much of our attention it can keep.
That made sense when software was expensive to build and every product needed millions of users to justify its existence.
But AI changes the economics.
Today, one person can build software for one business, one team, or even one workflow.
And software built for one customer doesn't need engagement.
It doesn't need to maximize usage.
It doesn't need to convince you to come back tomorrow.
It has exactly one job:
Return more than it costs.
More time.
Less manual work.
Fewer headaches.
Better decisions.
A quieter Sunday evening.
I like to think of this as something different: Returnware.
Not software measured by how much of your attention it captures, but by how much it gives back.
The best tools have always been the ones that quietly disappear into your work.
As AI reshapes how software is built, I hope we don't simply create more engaging software.
I hope we build software that's easier to forget because it's already done its job.
